Our Founder

Nashima Highsmith, Founder & Executive Director

Visionhandz was born from lived experience — two seasons of homelessness, and a refusal to let either one become the end of the story.

Nashima Highsmith is the founder of Visionhandz, an organization dedicated to empowering individuals and families experiencing housing instability through education, encouragement, practical resources, and long-term support. Her mission is rooted not only in professional experience, but in a personal journey of resilience that shaped her life's purpose.

Growing up with a learning disability, Nashima learned early that success often requires persistence, resilience, and believing in yourself even when others underestimate your potential. Rather than allowing obstacles to define her, she remained committed to her education and personal growth, developing a passion for helping others overcome adversity.

While pursuing her associate degree, Nashima experienced homelessness for the first time. Despite the uncertainty of not having stable housing, she refused to give up on her education and successfully earned her degree while working toward rebuilding her life.

Determined to continue creating a better future, Nashima went on to earn her bachelor's degree. Shortly afterward, while pregnant with her son, she experienced homelessness a second time. Instead of allowing those circumstances to define her, she continued pushing forward. She secured stable housing, welcomed her son into a safe home, and has continued raising him as a single mother while building her career and pursuing graduate studies.

Today, Nashima works in Human Resources, where she has developed experience helping individuals navigate employment opportunities and career growth. She combines that professional background with her lived experiences to better understand the barriers many families face when trying to rebuild their lives after housing instability.

Having experienced homelessness at two different stages of her life, Nashima understands that housing instability affects far more than where someone sleeps. It impacts confidence, opportunity, mental well-being, financial stability, and hope for the future. Those experiences became the foundation for Visionhandz — an organization created to walk alongside individuals and families as they rebuild their lives with dignity, practical resources, education, and compassionate support.

Through Visionhandz, Nashima is committed to helping individuals develop financial literacy, strengthen employment readiness, connect with community resources, and build the confidence needed to achieve long-term stability. Her vision is to create opportunities that empower families not simply to overcome homelessness, but to thrive beyond it.

Nashima believes every setback can become the foundation for a new beginning. Her life is a testament that circumstances do not determine a person's future. Through Visionhandz, she hopes to inspire others to believe that healing, stability, and lasting change are possible — and to ensure that every family she serves knows they are seen, valued, and capable of building a brighter future.
